Day 29: getting lost in the Amalfi coast

Luis, Sebastian and I grabbed an early train from Rome to Naples to head down to our Airbnb in San Lazzaro near Amalfi… After a super fast train we switched to a replacement bus, then more buses and we quickly ended up on quite a different journey than planned.

What a trip! Croquettes in Santallamere waiting for the next bus, here it all gets funky.

About 30 minutes in, the second bus we got headed in a totally unexpected direction than Google told us, then we got off in the middle of nowhere to get the bus back to Gragnole(?) waiting for quote some time.

Don’t trust map apps outside of major metro areas is the lesson here, ask locals! Always check with the bus driver where they are going ?

After spending an hour or so asking for advice and trying to find a taxi cab, we decided to walk to a taxi place uphill (very up hill, zone 2 cardio definitely in for the day!) about half an hour away.

We get there and the taxi place doesn’t exist anymore, being now a rough looking council estate just like where I grew up–stray dogs and all.

A local butcher managed to communicate to us that the next bus was hours away, and our best bet was to hitch-hike (Luis & Sebastian’native Spanish helped a lot with the Italian-only natives ?)

The sun starts to set and we’re lost, sweaty and stranded! Not too mention our phones are running low

Hitchhiking attempt

Eventually our lovely Airbnb host sent her friend to come pick us up! We were fully prepared to either sleep in the streets or walk 2 hours to San Lazzaro, but we really appreciated the ride and the guy showed us the places to go nearby.

We all dropped our bags off at the gorgeous apartment (pics incoming) and went for pizza forno Al legna at a lovely place in the town.

Then, a very early night wooooooo!

I really did want to get lost at least once on this trip, and this was fun with the guys; it would’ve been much more daunting alone though I am sure.
